…or so they’d like you to think.

Sweet Cheeks Gelato was our second creamery (of four) of the day and it was a good one to actually start our day off.

(The first was 99 Gelato Bar located in XM Studios, which to their unfortunate detriment, allowed us to sample their flavours. I didn’t buy their $13 double scoop in the end because all I could taste was sugar and maybe a slight bit of flavour. I demurred with “maybe after lunch,” and ran, like a coward.)

Indeed, Sweet Cheeks’ gelato scoops were most certainly sweet and cheekesque – I don’t think I’ve seen scoops this sizeable and round in a while. They looked good with the in-house peach light.

The cinnamon brown bread flavour was out by the time we were there in the early afternoon, so we disappointedly opted for our next best options, as no tasting was available either. Here is the Dark Chocolate Sorbet at the bottom, and the Ricotta with Pistachio Bits at the top.

Ricotta with Pistachio Bits

The ricotta base was a little cheesy and a lot sweet. A few bites in, we agreed that it tasted a lot like White Rabbit candy. Interestingly there were a lot more whole pistachios than ‘bits’ pistachios. I applaud this generosity, though I would have ironically preferred bits this time. I personally would have liked salted pistachio to make a more complex mix with the sweet ricotta, and I was reminded the pistachio was not salted every time I ate a large chunk. Perhaps people who like unsalted pistachio in a creamy gelato with a hint of cheese flavour will enjoy this better.

(In my extremely small sample size of the ‘interesting’ ice cream flavours that we chase, the sweetness level tends to be disproportionately high. I speculate whether it’s to hedge against people finding the ‘weird’ flavour too weird, but either way, I still yearn for less sweet cheese ice creams with more cheese flavour. Sadly, we have to keep looking…)

Dark Chocolate Sorbet

The dark chocolate sorbet was fine. Dark chocolatey, not too sweet, perfectly but unexcitingly acceptable.

Would I Go Again?

Overall I’d say Sweet Cheeks is really not bad, simply not special. The scoop size is very decent, the texture is smooth and not at all icy, and it lasted remarkably well while we sat outside in the afternoon heat (for anti-COVID air circulation). With all the other ice cream joints in the region, it’s Not Again for me, but one could certainly do worse.*

*like 99 Gelato Bar.
